Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week
ISEW is Back and Going Regional
Shaping Sustainable Energy, Locally and Nationally
For over 30 years, Indonesia and Germany have built a strong partnership advancing renewable energy through technical and financial cooperation. Today, this collaboration supports Indonesia’s ambitious energy and climate goals, including its Vision Indonesia Emas 2045 and commitment to reach net-zero emissions by 2060. Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW), launched in 2022, has become a key platform co-hosted by Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Bappenas, alongside GIZ Energy Programme. It brings together government leaders, industry experts, academia, and civil society to foster dialogue and innovation for sustainable energy. Recognising Indonesia’s diverse regional energy challenges, the 2025 ISEW Goes Regional events in Sulawesi and East Kalimantan localise this momentum by engaging regional governments, businesses, and communities to craft energy solutions that connect national ambitions with local contexts. This region-based approach is expected to lead to collaboration and practical action to accelerate Indonesia’s clean energy transition, addressing the specific needs and opportunities of each region.

A Legacy of Growth
ISEW Over the Years
ISEW 2022
The first (annual) Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) in 2022 marked an important milestone in fostering collaboration between Indonesia and international partners to accelerate the country’s energy transition. Held as a hybrid event in Jakarta and online, ISEW 2022 focused on advancing strategies for a just, clean, and low-carbon energy system, featuring high-level dialogue about Indonesia’s coal exit strategy, policy frameworks, technologies, and investment needed for decarbonisation. The event brought together policymakers, industry representatives, financiers, and civil society to share perspectives and develop comprehensive approaches for energy transition, including technical and policy discussions, stakeholder engagement beyond the energy sector, and strategic communication. ISEW 2022 highlighted the significance of accelerating climate mitigation through a robust energy transition roadmap and investment ecosystem, supporting Indonesia’s commitment to net zero emissions and its Nationally Determined Contribution to the UNFCCC
ISEW 2023
The Indonesia Sustainable Energy Week (ISEW) 2023 was held from October 10-13 in Jakarta at the Hotel Indonesia Kempinski, serving as a dynamic platform to promote Indonesia’s energy transition toward a sustainable future. Co-hosted by the Ministry of National Development Planning/Bappenas and the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources with support from German-Indonesian cooperation programs, the event brought together over 5,400 participants and more than 90 speakers both online and offline. The main theme focused on accelerating Indonesia’s energy transition through collaborative approaches, innovative renewable energy technologies, fiscal reforms, just transition principles including social inclusion, and private sector commitments. Key takeaways included the critical role of government and private sector collaboration, the need for coordinated policy and financing to unlock renewable energy potentials, attention to social and gender equity in the transition, and the importance of technical innovation and community empowerment in rural areas.
ISEW 2024
ISEW 2024, themed “United Towards a Sustainable Future: Advancing the Energy Transition for Indonesia Emas and Net Zero Emissions,” will be co-hosted by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (MEMR) and Bappenas and organized by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH with other German-funded partners. The event will highlight the extensive German-Indonesian energy cooperation supported by Germany’s Federal Ministry of Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK). Additionally, ISEW will provide a platform for stakeholder feedback to inform Indonesia’s Long- and Medium-Term National Development Plan in the energy sector.
